(And, right now, I'm listening to Mazzy Star's 'Fade Into You' - I wonder if this will become a song associated memory. Who knows...)

The Music of Strange Old Me
Right, something a little different today. Today you get a glimpse into the nonsensical mind of yours truly. I apologise in advance.
So, last night I was lying in my bed, as I'm wont to do. And, as I wasn't asleep, I whacked the iPod on shuffle and just listened. And as the songs came on I started getting very specific memories of times when I'd listened to them. It was strange. Now, I am a bugger for (over) associating things with other things (you may remember me being particularly unfair to Terry Pratchett, for instance) and I know I associate certain songs or pieces of music with certain times in my life, or people or places (I'm sure most people do)- I just had no idea there would be that many. And it was fun. And interesting. And surprising. I wish I'd have written them down to be honest.
I had no idea that Therapy?'s 'Die Laughing' was something I'd associate with me getting my hair cut, age 13, or so. Or that 'The Broad Majestic Shannon' reminded me of a specific stretch of road I'd driven along one winter evening about eleven years ago, while wearing a specific jumper (which,as a point of possible interest, I still have and wore only the other day). There's a Bee Gees song that will always remind me of being driven home from my Nan's house, holding a pack of Aeros to share with my brother and sister and I'll always associate Suede's 'So Young' with the school bus and an Aiwa personal cassette player. I think I was (and still am) a little surprised at how many memories there were and how strong and vivid they are - AND that most weren't associated with any dramatic event (I suppose I know about them already).
Anyone else like me? Or am I just weird?
Anyway, here are a few that stood out. Cos I'm nice/boring I thought I'd share them...
(And, right now, I'm listening to Mazzy Star's 'Fade Into You' - I wonder if this will become a song associated memory. Who knows...)

This might not be what you want to hear, but my take is that you're normal... Music is a strong trigger for memories for me too, as are places I've been to before (though less practical to revisit than music on an iPod). A recent drive through London on a gloomy day made me think I should either try disconnect the associations or move away. Different memories were triggered by the same area on another, sunny day!
My other thought was what old music is he listening to ;-)
Hm... Now I wonder... Were you listening to that music at all when that memory was created? There's hope for strangeness after all?
Funny how music can do that to you. I need an ipod. I have shares in one, but I really should get my own. When I can't sleep I always fancy listening to an audio book, which I've never done. A friend bought me a Cormac McCarthy's 'Blood Meridian' on audio book for Xmas, but it doesn't seem very middle-of-the-night-friendly.
That Bee Gees song is ace. I have a soft spot for that one.
Love 'Fade into you', that's sure to evoke something in you down the line, I rec.
Happy New Year, btw Nik - hope you're well and ready to take on 2011.
Hey Miss-neat. Oh yes, they're mostly oldies - because the memories are - and yes, I was listening to them at the time the memories were created. Strange, huh! But nice too.
Teresa! Hello!
Ooh yes, you should defo treat yourself to an iPod - better than bipoding :)
If I ever have trouble sleeping I put on The Dakota Suite's 'The End of Trying' - it is AWESOME to doze off to. That's my tip of the day!
And hooray for the Bee Gees; I don't say that very often!

PS Happy new year to you too!
You're wierd.
:-)
No, it's just the same for me too, but rediscovering old songs mean the associations get layered. They keep growing and sometimes bring back old writing too
Ha ha! I know! ;)
And glad I'm not alone. Brings back old writing huh? Do you write to music?
I get that too, or sometimes just a memory of how I was feeling at the time.
I love that Bee Gees song (and a lot of their others!) and it reminds me of feeling happy and excited - not sure why.
My best surprise ever - I usually hate surprises - was my husband taking me to Wembley to see the Bee Gees even though they're not his thing.
He Bernadette - glad you like it too and that you get the memories thing!
And what a lovely surprise! Three cheers for your hubby!
No, I can't write to music, but the stories floating about in my head at the time sometimes come back with the songs.
Though when I'm editing, I often listen to something wordless - Zoe Keating's a current favourite.
how's about you mr?
Go no - never have been able to write with any noise going on at all. I like SILENCE!!! Reading's a little more relaxed though but I don't think I've ever consciously put anything on...
I shall check Zoe out...
